Project Objectives
BIO2BIO project is funded in the frame of a cascading grant call of AGRITECH National Initiative. The project is a collaborative effort of the University of Milano Bicocca, University of Brescia, together with the companies BioC-Chem Solutions, Petroltecnica and Biontech. The project aims to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of an innovative industrial workflow that significantly enhances the bioremediation of contaminated soils. This cutting-edge approach not only seeks to remediate polluted environments but also to valorize agricultural wastes by converting them into valuable products like biosurfactants and biochar. These products are then used to develop an effective bioremediation solution.
General description
The initiative targets achieving a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 7, which implies that the system’s prototype will be demonstrated in an operational environment, marking a significant milestone in the application of such technologies. The synergistic effect of combining biochar and biosurfactants in soil bioremediation processes is exploited in this project. This combination is expected to significantly enhance the biodegradation of organic pollutants. Biochar provides a conducive environment for the proliferation and activity of microbial communities, while biosurfactants increase the solubility and dispersion of hydrophobic pollutants, making them more accessible for microbial degradation. This innovative approach promises to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of bioremediation strategies.
